Step 11 of the program of recovery urges us seek to know God better through prayer and meditation. We’ve already acknowledged that we need God to give us power to overcome our addictions, afflictions, and compulsive behaviors, because we are powerless to do so without him. Now it is time to grow closer to the One who saves us from ourselves.
Getting to know God better is a great joy in our recovery. Some of us don’t feel that way, though. We might even dread meeting with God! Perhaps we grew up with a distorted idea of who God is. Perhaps we felt that God was punishing, judgmental, or changed his mind on a whim. Perhaps we saw him as a “payback” God, or a God who only would help us if we did what he said.
Read the Bible verse above. This is one of the verses that Dewayne read in his testimony tonight. God, through his Son Jesus Christ who came to earth for us, is love. He loves you, and he calls you into his love. That’s what Step 11 is all about, getting to know THAT God, who loved you so much that he even died for you on a cross. He did not die to save the you that you think you should be, or the you that you’re trying to be, but the you that you are right now. God loves you.
Think about how it could be to get to know God who loves you so much. Talk about some ways that you can open the door to a deeper relationship with Jesus who wants only good for you. That’s Step 11!
