Our Fasting Course is a four-week journey into exploring one of the most powerful - and often neglected - of all of Jesus’ practices.

Fasting is going without food for a set amount of time to awaken our body and soul to our deeper hunger and need for God. This practice is one of the best ways we have to integrate our entire person, including our body, around God.

For over a thousand years, fasting was one of the central practices of the Way of Jesus. After all, Jesus began his life’s work with 40 days of fasting, a practice he continued throughout his lifetime. And he said, “Follow me.” It makes sense that we would follow his example and incorporate fasting into our overall discipleship to Jesus.

In our course we will cover four reasons why we fast: To offer ourselves to Jesus, to grow in holiness, to amplify our prayers, and to stand with the poor.

We will invite everyone to start where they are, with whatever small step they can take toward intentionally integrating this practice of Jesus into their lives. The amount of time to fast, the date of the fast, and what exactly is being fasted will all vary from person to person. Everyone will have the chance to discern how they will individually explore this practice for themselves.

If someone isn’t able to fast from food for physical or emotional reasons, we still encourage them to join us in this course and practice fasting from something other than food. Everyone deserves the chance to engage this powerful practice of Jesus. Much grace will be extended to all as we journey together.

Each week we will gather for dinner, learning, and conversation in small groups, developing relationships as we learn and grow together. Free dinner and childcare will be offered throughout the course.

We would love for you to join us as we develop our hunger for God through the powerful practice of fasting.

(This course was created by the same organization that developed the Sabbath Course and Prayer Course that has been offered in the past year at Grace. The format will be the same as those courses, with video teaching by pastor and author John Mark Comer, a printed course guide, and a reflective and restful approach to our spiritual lives.
