The Medical Team seeks to "Make a difference through Christ by touching lives and providing community access to compassionate care, which leads to physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness"
Current projects include:
• Monthly health screenings at each of the Third Saturday events; regular screenings include blood pressure and blood sugar screenings. Consistently, about 25% of those screened are referred to go see their physician – for issues that may be of some additional concern and need to be further examined by a medical professional. As availability warrants, they have also been able to provide referrals for free mammograms, free flu shots and various other medical services.
• They also accept donations for personal hygiene items, diabetic supplies and other items to provide to those in need.
• This team is also working to supply AEDs to the various campuses and to train volunteers and church members to operate them. (An AED or an automated external defibrillator provides the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.)
• Continuing partnership with the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) here is southwest Florida. Volunteers with SW Florida MRC understand that the first response in times of need is local response. As a MRC volunteer they are disaster trained and credentialed. Sponsored by the Lee County Health Department, the MRC is integrated into this area’s emergency management system. When deployed by LCHD, volunteers are protected from liability under Florida Sovereign Immunity Statutes and workers’ compensation insurance is provided.
A medical background is not necessary to serve on this team as there are numerous other opportunities to serve for willing individuals.
